The Visalia Police Department's Records Unit serves the public and the Police Department in maintaining and distributing all police files. The Records Unit is the public's first link when visiting the Police Department. The Unit receives, processes, maintains, and distributes over 20,000 reports per year.

Records Unit personnel must be aware of and apply the legal exemptions to the release of information to protect individual privacy, safety, reputation, and on-going investigations. The intent of the exemptions is to protect law enforcement investigations, not to shield information from legitimate scrutiny and, therefore, release information in accordance with the California Government Code and the Public Records Art regulation.

When a report is completed by an officer, it becomes the responsibility of the Records Unit to process the report in the proper manner. This process includes, but is not limited to, the following: typing the dictated narratives to the report and distributing the report to the proper recipients. The report is then entered and maintained by the Records Unit in computer files. If the report includes an arrest of a subject who is in custody, the Records Unit is responsible for processing all documents related to the arrest and submitting the report to the District Attorney before deadlines.

The Records Unit is also responsible in assisting the public with vehicle releases, accepting various payments such as parking citation and fix-it citation fines, responding to report request, and answering inquiries or directing the public to the appropriate individual/Division. The Records Unit is also in charge of entering arrest, traffic citation, and traffic collision data into its database.

Court Services coordinates all case complaints for presentation to the District Attorney and allied agencies within the criminal justice system. Court Services coordinates all appearances for members of the Department. Additionally, Court Services processes all requests for further information fromt he District Attorney's Office and see that the requested information is returned in a timely manner, so as not to delay the pursuance of filings on criminal cases.
