The Council will consider whether to continue with the quarter-cent sales tax, passed by voters in 2004, to increase public safety in the community. Many milestones have been reached, despite the economic challenges of the last four years.
- A total of 22 new police officers have been added to the Visalia Police Department and two new precincts in both the north and south parts of the City opened.
- The City's 911 emergency operations will be improved with the construction of a new emergency dispatch center. Architects are now being interviewed for the project.
- 15 new firefighters have been hired, and are staffing Fire Station No. 55 in northwest Visalia. A second station is to be built in the southwest with an anticipated opening in 2012/13 or 2013/14. The leasing of a southeast station at Lovers Lane effectively adds a third new firestation to the Fire plan.
- Fire Station No. 55 includes a new training facility which has been utilized by firefighters across the region.
