Celebrate Safely with Pets on NYE

12.31.25

Fireworks (Safe and Sane only!) can be fun when celebrating the New Year, but Visalia Animal Services reminds us that our furry friends have better hearing than we do and don't find as much joy in a firework show.

The fire and loud noises from the fireworks can be scary and every year many pets go missing during the holiday celebrations. So, if you and your family are celebrating this holiday here are a few tips to keep them safe.

Tips to keep your pet safe:
1. Play calming music or have the TV on.
2. Do not let them outside, unsupervised.
3. Keep all doors, windows, and doggie doors secured.
4. Talk to your veterinarian about other medications that can help with reducing anxiety.
5. Hire a pet-sitter if you are leaving for the night.
6. MAKE SURE YOUR PET IS MICROCHIPPED OR WEARING AN UPDATED TAG WITH YOUR INFORMATION. (If you can not afford a microchip or tag, try getting an inexpensive collar and write your phone number on it, in permanent marker)
7. Provide your dog with stimuli when you leave (frozen Kong with treats inside, puzzles, frozen carrots, etc).
8. Exercise your pup early-on in the day!
9. Take a current photograph of your dog.
10. Don’t take your pet along for the fireworks.

If you have a furry friend at home think of them this holiday and make sure they stay safe!
