Asphalt Work on Roadways Begins 7/15
Made possible by Measure N and Landscape and Lighting Districts funding, application of asphalt rejuvenating agent will begin Monday, July 15th in the northwest quadrant of Visalia and will continue through Thursday, August 8th.
"This process improves the durability of the asphalt on our roads and delays the aging process, ultimately getting more life out of what we drive on every day," shared Norm Goldstrom, Public Works Manager. "Thanks to Measure N, coupled with Landscape and Lighting Improvement Districts (funds collected with property taxes ), we can perform this necessary preventative street maintenance for better pricing."
The rejuvenating asphalt, known as reclamite seal, is made up of petroleum oils and sand, which provides a simple, two-step method for restoring and preserving durability in asphalt.
This extends the life of recently constructed pavement and provide for corrective maintenance on deteriorated pavements.
Once the rejuvenating emulsion has penetrated the existing pavement surface, a coating of dry sand is applied to the surface to decrease tracking of the oils and provide additional skid resistance. The remaining oiled sand not absorbed into the existing pavement is then swept by a street sweeper.
“Talley Oil Inc., is the contracted party to complete this project and will have crews out between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily,” added Goldstrom. “Streets that receive treatment will not be open to parking and some minor traffic delays can be expected.”
Temporary "No Parking" signs will be posted three working days in advance of the work.
To minimize any inconvenience from this project, residents in impacted areas are advised to:
- Keep pets and children off the street during application to prevent oil being tracked into the home. Check pets feet and shoes for residue after application to protect floors.
- Drive slow (10mph) to prevent pick up. Residue on vehicles can be removed by immediately washing with dish soap and water.
- If you track residue into your driveway or garage, it can be washed off or it will wear off in two to six weeks.
