Fire Damages Apartment Building on Santa Fe

This morning at 5:31 a.m., the Visalia Fire Department was dispatched to an apartment fire at 1220 S. Santa Fe.

Upon the arrival of the first fire unit, the Fire Department found a two-story apartment building with heavy fire showing through the roof. Already on scene, the Visalia Police Department had begun evacuating residents from the building.

As the attack began, crews found fire burning and spreading to the attic space above three of the four apartment units. A Second Alarm was called bringing additional fire engines and personnel.

Fire crews worked to extinguish the fire and protect the personal property in the apartments and the fire was contained in approximately 45 minutes.

The fire caused an estimated $125,000 in damage and nine occupants were displaced due to the fire. The American Red Cross responded to assist the displaced residents and there were no injuries to civilians or fire personnel.

The fire has been deemed accidental and started in the attic space, although the exact cause of the fire has not been determined at this time.

Six fire engines, one ladder truck, three battalion chiefs and two fire inspectors responded to the incident, with a total of 26 personnel.  In addition, off-duty personnel were recalled to staff the fire stations. The Tulare County Fire Department and Tulare City Fire Department also assisted with fire station coverage.
