City of Visalia's Senior Games Planning to Begin

Get ready Visalia! It’s time to start planning the 2017 Visalia Senior Games. Senior Games are taking the sporting world by storm at the local, state, national and world competition levels and will be coming back to Visalia in the spring of 2017.

The National Senior Games Association (NSGA) has 19 events and, to be included in the NSGA, a local organizer must offer at least one-half of the NSGA’s approved sports by the third year of hosting Senior Games. Visalia held its first event in 2015 with, the second event scheduled for 2017.

“We’ve selected events that we feel appeal to the 50+ community and are at the heart of Senior Games,” says Jeannie Greenwood, Director for the City of Visalia Parks & Recreation Department.  “We have City-owned facilities that will host most of the events, the events are programs that we already offer and know are popular in the Central Valley and they are events we have the expertise to facilitate.”

The 2017 Visalia Senior Games is being planned for this spring and will take place March 16th through March 19th and March 25th through the March 26th.  In order to make this second year as exciting and fun as possible, the Parks & Recreation Department is looking for assistance from the public to put Visalia on the Senior Games map.

“An event of this size, with the potential to attract not only hundreds of local participants but seniors from throughout the state, will need a lot of resources,” states Greenwood.  “We’re excited about hosting this event and hope we can count on our community to support our efforts.”

There are several upcoming meetings that the public is encouraged to attend where they can assist with the planning of the 2017 Senior Games.  All meetings will take place at the Visalia Senior Center, located at 310 N Locust Street.

  • Sponsorship Committee – Thursday, August 4th at 5:30 pm
  • Sports Committee – Thursday, August 11th at 5:30 pm
  • Planning Task Force Meeting – Thursday, August 25th at 5:30 pm

“There are many ways to get involved,” adds Greenwood. “From joining the Visalia Senior Games Planning Task Force to volunteering at an event, to providing sponsorships and contributions; we will need lots of people to make our second event even better than the first.”

With volunteer positions that range from event chairs to volunteer coordination to marketing, sponsorships and social events, there’s something for everyone to get involved in.
