“Chief Mestas has built a strong internal organization and I have no doubt the department will continue its strong record under the new Chief,” said City Manager Mike Olmos.
A full evaluation process of qualified candidates is being conducted, including input from community and professional members. The City Manager will make the final appointment with confirmation from the City Council. Appointment is anticipated in March. If a candidate is selected from the internal recruitment, he or she will become the Acting Chief of Police and assume the position upon Chief Mestas’ retirement.
For the duration of the recruitment process, Lieutenant Ed Lynn will serve as Acting Police Chief. Lieutenant Lynn began his career with the City of Visalia in 1985, has worked in all areas of the department, and has previously served in the acting Chief capacity.
City Manager Mike Olmos added that appointing Lt. Lynn, who has indicated no interest in the position, allows candidates to focus on the internal interview process for the permanent Chief of Police position.
