Citizens Academy

The Visalia Police Department accepts applications for our Citizens Police Academy on an ongoing basis. The Citizens Police Academy takes place once per year, beginning in March of each year. Classes take place at Visalia Police Department Headquarters, one day a week from 6:00pm-8:00pm. Citizen’s Police Academy is a pre-requisite for becoming a Volunteer in Police Services (VIPS) for our agency. Citizens Academy allows potential volunteers to become acquainted with the inner workings of the Visalia Police Department while being trained to assist in non-hazardous duties.

Are you interested in learning more about the inner workings of the Visalia Police Department, but don’t have the desire to become a volunteer?

The Visalia Police Department will open up several spots to community members who would like to know more about their local law enforcement agency. The goal of opening up our Academy to the community is to promote a greater awareness and better understanding of local law enforcement’s challenging and unique role within the community and to forge partnerships within the community so we can work together to mutually create a safe and livable community. To be eligible, community members must either live or work in Visalia.

For individuals interested in attending the Citizens Police Academy, please submit a Preliminary Application to the Crime Prevention office. For individuals interested in becoming a VIPS, there will be an additional Personal History statement and Pre-Investigative questionnaire, Live Scan background check, and interview with the Sergeant of the Volunteer (VIPS) Unit.

For more information on the Citizens Police Academy, please contact the Community Outreach Coordinator at 713-4147 and download the application in the link below:
