Celebrating 50 Years of Friendship with Miki, Japan

Saturday, April 22nd marks the ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony of Visalia's newest park, Miki City Park.

Located on the northwest corner of Mineral King Avenue and Johnson Street, the Miki City Park ribbon cutting and dedication celebrates 50 years of Visalia and Miki, Japan as sister cities. Featuring drought tolerant landscaping and cultural touches honoring Miki, the 1/3 acre park opening will be attended by a delegation of guests from Miki.

Attendees are invited to welcome our sister city guests and take part in this historical day, as the event begins at 10 a.m. Immediately following, Earth Day 2017 will kick off directly across the street and feature music, food, exhibits and activities for children and adults until 3 p.m.

Family Billiards, New Retail and Restaurants Proposed

Plaza Drive, Visalia Parkway and Mineral King Plaza Shopping Center could all see new development underway, as proposals are rolling through the review and approval process.

Additional restaurants, and potentially retail space, are being proposed on Plaza Drive just northwest of the Chevron at Plaza and Crowley. The new spaces are setup for fast casual offerings, including a drive thru, while a mini-market and gas station are being proposed at the southwest corner of Visalia Parkway and Demaree. With numerous commercial spaces, there are a total of four building pads (in addition to the mini-market) that would be located west of recently proposed multi-family and single family housing.

The shopping center on Mineral King that is home to Roller Towne and Chuck E. Cheese may soon feature a family billiards location. Working through the entitlement process, this shopping center will offer a variety of options including long standing Roller Towne and Chuck E Cheese, along with the new Quantum Leap trampoline park and a Fitness Evolution gym.

Black Bear Restaurant Receives Green Business Award

Leave it to the bears to lead the way in nature-friendly business practices, as Black Bear Diner is the recipient of the first Visalia Environmental Committee Green Business Award.

Located at 900 S. Mooney, Black Bear Diner was one of the first restaurants in Visalia to upgrade their solid waste services to include both mixed recycling and organic waste composting in order to divert waste from Visalia’s local landfill, as per Assembly Bills’ 341 and 1826.

"Thanks to the efforts of management and staff, recycling and food waste composting has made a big impact on the level of solid waste services needed at the restaurant," says Nathan Garza, Natural Resources Conservation Division, City of Visalia. "Because of their efforts, Black Bear Diner has reduced the amount of landfill bound waste from 32 yards to only 12 yards per week, with the remaining waste either recycled and/or composted."

Awarded by the Visalia Environmental Committee, and recognized by the Visalia Chamber of Commerce, the Green Business Award honors local business for their work on reducing waste and employing green business practices. For more information on green practices, visit www.gogreenvisalia.com
