Public Hearing for Measure N on April 3rd

The City Council conducted the first of two public hearings to receive comment on the proposed first year Measure N spending plan at this week's City Council meeting on Monday, March 20th. The second and final public hearing will be held during the regular session of the City Council meeting on Monday, April 3rd.

Measure N, the ½ cent sales tax that begins April 1, 2017, requires the City to conduct two public hearings before adopting a spending plan. Prior to this, the City Council approved a spending plan and the Measure N Oversight Committee reviewed and approved the City Council’s first year spending plan.

Significant points were made by staff during the public hearing, including but not limited to, noting that revenues are estimated higher than the budget because the first year includes five quarters of revenues, and that the Police budget is higher than the initial plan because Council authorized the early hiring of police recruits in the Police Academy.

The Measure N Fund is projected to collect $13.7 million over five quarters and staff is requesting to spend a total of $11.6 million in fiscal year 16/17 and 17/18.

The second public hearing is scheduled for the 7 p.m. regular session of the Visalia City Council on Monday, April 3, 2017. For more information on Measure N, visit www.visalia.city/measuren.
