Stay Water Wise While Keeping Trees Alive

We're starting to see a little rain, but Visalia and the State of California remains in a drought. With water resources scarce, it's important to remember that trees are generally the most valuable landscape asset we have. Cutting back water use can have a negative impact on trees, but by using water wisely, we can not only save them, but keep them healthy and a thriving part of our City.

November is the last month of 2016 with twice-a-week watering days and come December of this year, there will be no watering of lawns allowed. However, trees can be watered anytime with a bucket or attended hand-held hose with a shut-off nozzle.

Remember, don't prune your trees during a drought, as it causes extra stress. Reduce competition for water by removing weeds and grass within four feet of the trunk and place a four to six inch deep layer of mulch within the drip line. This helps retain moisture and conserve water, just keep mulch at least four inches away from the trunk.

Do you have a Valley Oak on your property? The City's Valley Oak Ordinance establishes policies for the care, trimming and removal of these majestic trees. To find out about how to care for your Valley Oak, visit City of Visalia Urban Forestry.

Downtown Parking Lot Work Continues

The City of Visalia continues work on downtown parking lots as temporarty closures come to Lots 9 and 10, both located between East Center Avenue and East Main Street, as crews survey the area.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, November 9th, the west half of parking Lots 9 and 10 will be closed from the early morning until the end of the day. On Thursday, November 10th, Lots 9 and 10 will have their east half closed from the early morning until the end of the day.

Work continues on downtown parking Lots 36 and 3, as crews install pervious concrete. Made possible by a grant from the State Water Board, pervious concrete is an environmentally friendly product that allows water to drain through and ultimately be absorbed back into the ground.

This downtwon parking lot work is designed to reduce pollution and storm water flows into Mill Creek, as pervious concrete filters out pollutants that would normally go through the storm drain system and into a storm drain basin. All current work is slated to be done before the holiday shopping season begins and work will resume again in January 2017. For a complete map of parking lot locations, visit www.visalia.city
