Dining Options Expand with Fitness to Follow

From restaurants and microbreweries to new fitness opportunities, Visalia is ground zero for new development.

Visalian's love hearing news on up and coming eateries and a new restaurant is being proposed at the site of the old Gina's Ristorante on West Sunnyside. While the flavor of that restaurants particular cuisine is unknown at this time, everyone is keeping their eye on Outback Steakhouse. Currently under construction at the old Mimi's site, the home of the blooming onion is slated to open winter 2016.

Business tax license activity tells us that another Deli Delicous will be opening across Acequia from the Visalia Convention Center while an Island Burgers and Shakes is planned for the corner of Lovers Lane and Noble Avenue. Rounding out the options is new restaurant Left of Center Mercado and Grill. Billed as Southern with a Latin flavor, Left of Center calls the former Sue Sa's Club House home.

For those planning a night out at each of the aformentioned spots, it may be helpful to know that a Planet Fitness is being proposed at the former Young's Market site at the south east corner of Demaree and Walnut. An additional as yet unnamed gym is being proposed in the former Marinello School of Beauty facility on Mooney near the Visalia Mall.sep_bar_down.jpg

Come Out and Make A Difference

As the month of October nears, we're reminded that no matter the task, every single one of us can make a difference in the lives of our neighbors, friends and community. Coming Saturday, October 22nd, Make A Difference Day is one of the largest annual single-days of service nationwide and we are once again celebrating it right here in Visalia.

This special day of giving back reminds us that no matter who you are or where you're from, everyone has the power to do something that improves the life of another. Whether it's starting a project that helps one person, or working on one that benefits a whole community, every contribution makes a difference.

The City of Visalia proudly participates in this nationwide event with projects all across our community with work being done in Lincoln Oval Park, Seven Oaks Park and more. We're offering opportunities for large groups, small groups and individuals to work in our parks, trailways and waterways on this special day. Interested in participating this year and helping make a difference? Contact the Public Works Department at (559) 713-4428 or email [email protected]sep_bar_down.jpg

DUI/Driver's License Checkpoint This Friday

Did you know that crashes involving impaired drivers can be reduced by up to 20% when a DUI checkpoint is held with coordinating patrols? This goes a long way to reducing alcohol-impaired driving crashes. One happens in our nation every 51 minutes.

Thanks to a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Visalia Police Department is conducting a Driving Under the Influence (DUI)/Driver's License Checkpoint this Friday, September 23rd.

Being held at an undisclosed location within Visalia, the checkpoint will occur from 9 p.m. to 3 p.m. Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment, while checking drivers for proper licensing. Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees and DUI classes. and associated expenses that can exceed $10,000. If you see someone who may be driving under the influence of alchohol or drug impairment, dial 911. sep_bar_down.jpg

This & That

  • Big congratulations are in order for the Visalia Arts Consortium! The Arts Consortium has been ranked #9 in the State of California. Operating for just seven years, the Arts Consortium ranked higher than Fresno, Santa Barbara, Ventura and Napa.

  • The 15th Annual Visalia Home Expo is once again at the Visalia Convention Center this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. City Departments like Community Development will be on hand to help homeowners understand the types of work that need a permit, and remember to "Think Permit… Protect your home. Protect your family.” For show times, ticket prices and more show information, visit www.visaliahomeshows.com.
