Micro-Breweries/Micro-Wineries Get Yes Vote

Visalia’s east downtown is one step closer to being the home of micro-breweries and micro-wineries, as the City Council voted to create an overlay district which will allow micro businesses to open in the east downtown area.

The proposed district encompasses approximately 220 acres of east downtown, between Murray Avenue to the north, Ben Maddox Way to the east, Mineral King to the south, and Santa Fe to the west.

A big step for future brewery owners, Council and City staff first heard from the Visalia Chamber of Commerce and interested parties who sought to establish micro-brewery businesses in Visalia back in January of this year. The new zoning amendment will remove existing requirements for a micro-brewery/winery to include a restaurant component and allows retail sale for off-site consumption.  However, establishments must be at least 200 feet walking distance from any sensitive uses, including elementary schools, children’s museums, parks, or places of worship.

Proponents assert that encouraging this relatively new business model will provide Visalia a number of benefits, such as promoting entrepreneurship and tourism, while revitalizing underutilized buildings and giving new life to distressed areas. In addition, microbreweries are expected to provide an economic stimulus to Downtown Visalia and become another draw for locals and visitors alike.

Council’s next action will take place on Tuesday, September 6th when the second reading and adoption of the new ordinance is expected to take place.

Learn About the Visalia Essential City Services Protection Measure

Visalia voters will vote this November on whether they want to increase financial support for police, fire, road maintenance and other essential city services. If enacted, the Visalia Essential City Services Protection Measure will implement a ½ cent sales tax to maintain public safety services, address homelessness and repair streets and roads.

If approved by voters, funding generated by the Visalia Essential City Services Protection Measure will help address Visalia’s essential city services such as maintaining 911 emergency, police patrols and fire response times, maintaining gang prevention efforts, attracting businesses and jobs, addressing homelessness and maintaining local streets and infrastructure.

The City is seeking opportunities to meet with community groups so that we can help create an informed electorate.
