New Shopping and Dining Choices Come to Visalia

As we roll into the new season, big news on businesses here in Visalia keep springing up. DSW (Designer Shoe Warehouse) at 3725 S. Mooney Blvd. in the Gateway Plaza Shopping Center is now open and seeing big crowds as shoppers prepare for warmer weather.

Those ready for new dining experiences can look forward to two new spots for pizza pies. Pieology, located on 3733 S. Mooney Blvd. in the old Sleep Center building, specializes in personally designed pies while Blaze Pizza, 2031 S. Mooney Blvd. near the Visalia Mall, will soon be all about the "fast fire'd" experience.

For those with a craving for a southwestern taste, Rubio’s is now open at 4021 S. Mooney Boulevard and lines have been out the door as Ralph Rubio himself welcomed Visalians on the first day of business. A menu of south of the border classics prepared California style, Rubio’s fish tacos are already a hit.

Rounding out the new, diverse dining options throughout the City, Outback Steakhouse will soon have a Visalia location. Hailing from the land down under, the Australian-themed restaurant has filed preliminary plans with the City and will replace Mimi’s Cafe on Mooney and Cameron in the Packwood Creek Shopping Center.

Essential Services Outreach Underway

Public safety is the City of Visalia's number one committment. While over 70% of the General Fund monies go to this vital component, we still can't keep up with the growing demand for police and fire services.

The Visalia City Council has worked to put money back into the reserves and pay for essential services, even as sales tax revenue has continued to decrease. With public input and the reccomendations from the Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) and the Ballot Measure Advisory Committee (BMAC), there could be hope on the horizon.

City staff are scheduling community group presentations and are looking to connect with citizens to ask, should a ½ cent sales tax to maintain essential services for our City be on the November ballot? If you’d like to host an Essential Services Community Discussion, contact Allison Lambert, City of Visalia Communications Manager, by phone at  713-4535 or by email at [email protected].

This & That

  • Community Development’s annual traffic counts is now underway. For the next two months, Metro Traffic Data will be laying traffic hoses to collect traffic volume data and using cameras to conduct intersection turning movement counts throughout the City.

  • Fire Station 53 is now open and operational. Located at Walnut and Atwood, Visalia’s newest addition to the network of fire stations will target an average response time of four minutes in its coverage area. Response time like this keeps the Fire Department’s ratings low, resulting in cost savings for Visalia homeowners and businesses.

  • Construction equipment on the corner of Caldwell and Court is getting attention from drivers on the busy thoroughfare. The future site for a new Jack in the Box fast food restaurant, the land developer is installing storm drain improvements now before moving into the next phase of construction.
