Water Flows From Terminus Dam to City Basins

In preparation for early 2016 storms, the United States Army Corps of Engineers began releasing 15,000 acre feet of water from Lake Kaweahrsquo;s Terminus Dam on December 28th.

Ensuring adequate flood-control storage for more El Nino storms, the City Council authorized installation of a pipeline from Persian Ditch to Lisendra Basin, as the City continues to maximize storm water for groundwater recharge.

The City holds stock in Persian and Watson Ditch companies and arranged to have the Corps Terminus Dam release bring water to Creekside Basin at McAuliff St. and Mill Creek, and to Lisendra Basin at Walnut Ave. and Roeben St.

Terminus Dam is a flood control dam operated by the Corps of Engineers. Available lake storage is utilized by water rights holders such as irrigation districts and ditch companies.

Approximately 100 acre feet have been delivered to the two basins, ultimately supplementing the groundwater, one of Visaliarsquo;s most precious resources.

Storms Hit Valley, Conservation Still Top Priority

El Nino has fully arrived and as the much needed rain fills creeks, ponding basins and more, conservation is still a top priority.

Prompted by the State-mandated 32% reduction in water use, the City of Visalia is currently on a no-watering schedule through the end of February, meaning watering is not permitted on any day.

Car washing is allowed with a hand-held bucket and/or hose with a shut-off nozzle, however, runoff is prohibited. Hand watering of shrubs, trees or vegetables is allowed with a watering can or by an attended hose with shut-off nozzle. This exception does not apply to lawns. Ornamental fountains can remain functioning, but must use a water recycling system.

For exceptions to the water schedule and water saving tips, visit www.gogreenvisalia.com. To report a water use violation, call the City of Visalia Natural Resources at (559) 713-4531 or download the Visalia Works app and submit a confidential report via smart phone or tablet.
