Inaugural Visalia Senior Games Wraps The first senior games held in the Central Valley, the Visalia Senior Games, wrapped, but the energy of the event is still running high. An initiative of the City Council, Visalia Senior Games was presented by Kaweah Delta Health Care District, supported by agencies and businesses throughout Visalia and brought participants ages 50 and better to Visalia for five days of fun. With 50 California cities represented, athletes traveled from as far as Oregon for a chance at a medal finish. Events ranged from pickleball to bowling, golf to a 5K and 10K road race. Ultimately, 237 athletes competed in 271 events, as they enjoyed all that Visalia has to offer. "The City of Visalia looks forward to our second Visalia Senior Games," shared Vice Mayor Warren Gubler. "I challenge each participant to not only join us again for the next games, but to encourage at least one other senior to sign-up." A Giant Sequoia In Our Own Backyard Downtown Visalia is a gem in itself, but did you know that it is also home to one of the only Giant Sequoias on the valley floor? The Visalia Visitors and Convention Bureau (VCVB) is working to create a visitor feature at the Giant Sequia Tree. Supported by Visalia City Council, the VCVB hopes to create an educational feature at the tree that would entice visitors to stop in Visalia either on their way to Sequoia National Park or as a quick stop as they enjoy the sights and sounds of Visalia on their way through the Valley. To visit Visalia's Giant Sequoia, head downtown as the tree is located on the west side of the post office on Acequia.

Building Safety Work Results in Lower Insurance Premiums The City of Visalia has received high marks in the Building Safety Division, thanks to work by City staff members in the Community Development Department. “We’re audited every five years and the Insurance Service Office (ISO) looks at how we’re implementing the State building codes, how we manage workload and our overall business practices,” states Chuck Clark, Building Official, City of Visalia Community Development. “Through their Building Code Effectiveness Grading Classification, we received a two in both categories we were audited on, family residential and commercial and industry properties.” The ISO’s ratings can range from one to 10, with one being the best and 10 being the worst. A low rate can save community dollars. The City’s rating information will be provided to insurance companies, equating to lower premiums throughout the City.
