Station 53 breaks ground

Visalia's newest fire station breaks ground in ceremonies set for 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5 at the site's location at Atwood Street and Walnut Avenue. Fire Chief Doug McBee will provide opening remarks, with comments and introductions by Mayor Steve Nelsen.

Fire Station 52 will be a new 6,800 square foot station at the southeast corner of Walnut and Atwood. Its primary response area will be the southwest quadrant of the City. The City Council approved a construction contract for $2.2 million with Cooper Construction. The project will be funded through Measure T, and the budget includes land acquisition, onsite and offsite construction improvements, project management, design costs, and low water use landscaping.

East Side Regional Park Project workshops set for Feb. 11, 12

The first two of four community workshops for the East Side Regional Park and Groundwater Recharge Project will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Cafe 210, 210 W. Center Ave., and Thursday, Feb. 12, at the Whitendale Community Center, 630 W. Beech Ave.

The East Side Regional Park and Groundwater Recharge Project integrates groundwater recharge basins with regional park facilities at the 248-acre complex, located north of Highway 198 between the large, dual-tower pole electrical lines and Road 152. The public is encouraged to attend each of the workshops to fully participate in the park design process.

Workshops #1 and #2 are designed to engage the participants to determine the community's recreational needs and amenities for the park and which uses/activities have the highest priority. The development of the regional park is anticipated to be done in phases, with the estimated $10 million in funding for the groundwater recharge facilities to be obtained first. The groundwater recharge basins are an integral part of the City's strategy to help sustain Visalia's water resources and for implementation of the recycled water exchange agreement with the Tulare Irrigation District. The site location is optimal for both groundwater recharge and stormwater layoff facilities.

City's website has new name, look

The City of Visalia has launched a newly designed website with user-friendly features designed to customize the site to visitors' own unique needs. "The City's website now features up-to-date technology that accommodates the site on a multitude of mediums with a responsive layout, and enables visitors to customize their own options," said Community Relations Manager Nancy Loliva. "The new site even has a new address at Visalia.city."

Custom features include: "My Visalia" resident portal allowing residents and visitors to personalize the website to deliver only the information they want, and; "Visalia Works", a web-based and mobile request and issue management system which allow citizens to submit requests for information, access trouble and violation reports online, and if they desire, receive email, phone, or mail acknowledgements and updates.

The Mobile SmartPhone app for IOS/Android platforms is scheduled to roll out by mid-March. Loliva said the City's app, one of the newest software being produced by Civica, the website vendor, will feature not only service request functions, but news, events, maps, city contacts, My Visalia and FAQ icons to access information literally in the palm of your hand.

The website redesign was over a six-month process, and the design committee was made up of representatives from City departments. Design committee members are: Pamela Sing, Community Development; Heather Robertson, Fire; Bob Craine, Information Services; Allison Lambert, Parks Recreation; Carina Mello, Police; Jana Ferguson, Public Works; and Mario Cifuentez, Transportation and General Services. All City Departments have designated content managers responsible for overseeing the content of their respective webpages.
