Council authorizes recommending SeaPort as air service carrier
The City Council authorized a recommendation to the Department of Transportation to recommend award of the Essential Air Service contract to SeaPort Airlines for an anticipated two-year contract period, and not requiring Great Lakes to continue operating until the new carrier can begin providing service.
Airport Manager Mario Cifuentez presented Council with an overview of the five Essential Air Service (EAS) proposals received for the Visalia Airport which currently provide service from Visalia to Los Angeles. He also provided information that led to the recommendation by a sub-committee created by Council in 2006 and consisting of Vice Mayor Warren Gubler, Council Member Bob Link, City Manager Mike Olmos, Deputy City Manager Eric Frost and Airport Manager Mario Cifuentez.
If the award is approved by the Department of Transportation, all SeaPort flights would be flown using the 9 passenger Cessna Caravan, a non-pressurized, single engine aircraft. Its proposal included a mix of daily one-stop and nonstop flights to Burbank-San Diego and Merced-Oakland, fares starting at $59 per one-way trip to Burbank and Oakland, and a total of 24 departures per week (12 to Burbank, 12 to Oakland) resulting in 216 available seats per week.
