Southwest Fire Station moves ahead

The City Council approved the configuration and preferred building elevation for the new Fire Station 53 to be built at the southeast corner of Atwood and Walnut Avenue.

The 7,000 square foot facility is estimated to cost a total of $3.24 million, which will be funded through Measure T, the quarter-cent sales tax measure approved by voters. The budget includes land acquisition, onsite and offsite construction improvements, project management, design costs, and low water use landscaping.

The preferred building elevation, pictured above, reduces the building size from the floor plan of Fire Station 55 at Shirk and Ferguson. The project is scheduled to go before the City's Site Plan Review Committee on Wednesday, June 18, and is anticipated to receive a "revise and proceed" with conditions of approval for going forward with the project.

The preferred building elevation was one of three developed by the architect with RRM Design Group. Staff conducted extensive outreach, including a public meeting on May 27. While the current zoning for the site is residential, a fire station is allowed in this zone as a conditional use. A Conditional Use Permit allows the City to consider special uses which may be essential or desirable to the community and provides flexibility within a zoning ordinance.

Bidding for the construction of the project is estimated to be done in late October, with an anticpated award of the contract in December. Construction is slated to begin in early 2015.

Council to vote on budget June 26

The Visalia City Council on Monday continued budget talks as it prepares to vote on a two-year budget at a June 26 special meeting. City staff fielded questions on issues from the desired size of the city's reserve fund to contributions to the Public Employees' Retirement System, but no actions were taken. Other Council news: The council voted to move forward with its plans to extend Oak Avenue several hundred feet to connect it to North Burke Street. Council approved plans to build a median around the tracks with landscaping and a wrought iron fence to limit pedestrian traffic around the train. The median would include a pedestrian crossing in the middle of the fencing. The total cost of the project is estimated around $1 million and will be paid for by Measure R. The Council also adopted new fees, increases and adjustments to the City's Rates and Fees schedule and authorized amending the schedule for Fiscal Year 2014/15. To view the staff report, click here.
