Impact of power outage discussed

The Aug. 19 power outage resulting from a fire at the Southern California Edison Rector Station left over 120,000 Edison customers in the dark, including most of the City.

Fire Chief Doug McBee updated the City Council Sept. 3 on the City's response to the outage, which prompted the opening of the Emergency Operations Center shortly after the outage at 7 p.m. The EOC remained in operation into the early morning, with staff working to evaluate the impacts of the outage on the community and disseminated information to the community through media updates and the use of the Alert TC Reverse 911 system.

Of primary concern was the impact on traffic signals throughout the community. City Public Works crews provided temporary stop signs at all affected intersections, and the Fire and Police departments added staff to provide adequate emergency response services to the community.

Staff will return to Council with an update on costs associated with issues that need to be addressed to provide fast, organized and effective help to the community in any type of emergency. They include: Purchase of one or more trailer mounted generators and install switches on critical buildings; install generators on all radio repeaters, compressed natural gas compressor and computer servers; develop a list that prioritizes intersections requiring signs and identify signals with battery back-up, and; purchase paper stop signs.

Social Bus Makes Debut
Visalia Transit has launched a new marketing campaign to highlight the departments’ adoption of social media as a way to communicate with its passengers and share vital information about the services offered.

Visalia Transit can now be found on social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. With a large change in the demographics of its riders, namely an increase in students and young adults commuting to and from school and/or work, adopting the use of social media, as a communication tool, will help Visalia Transit correspond to these individuals.

While only one new 40’ BRT style CNG bus is being branded as the #SocialBus, people will be able to use this hashtag to follow Visalia Transit updates. This bus also has the unique feature of being outfitted with Wi-Fi, which is a beta test at this time.
