The Palette for Plaza
Road work ahead - the Plaza Drive Interchange project is on the home stretch since construction began in March 2012. Work is scheduled to be completed - including the sandblasting, painting and finishing touches on the Welcome to Visalia sign and the slope paving under the bridge.
The original architectural concept for the "Welcome to the City of Visalia" sign was adapted by the design team to be buildable, meet Federal Highway Standards, and be approved by CalTrans for construction. Staff created a rendering based on Caltrans approved construction plans and presented it to the architectural committee that developed the original concept. The final plans were approved by the committee, and is featured above. At Monday's meeting, the City Council approved a change order for a CalTrans required overhead freeway sign for $379,287.50, and additional traffic control for $91,463.50.
Lane closures are planned from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. the week of Aug. 25-30 and Sept. 2-6. Signals on Plaza at Crowley, Hurley, and Goshen will be on flashing red. The southbound lanes of Plaza Drive from Goshen to Airport are scheduled to open Aug. 30. One final major detour is scheduled the end of September. Westbound 198 to the northbound 99 connector will be closed in order to install two overhead signs.
