Efforts Wiping Graffiti Off Of City's Landscape

What a difference 4,000 hours can make in a year. The City's Graffiti Abatement maintenance workers removed or covered 840,790 square feet of graffiti city-wide from July1, 2010 through June 30, 2011. The program's staff consists of one supervisor, one hourly graffiti program coordinator, and four hourly graffiti abatement maintenance workers.

The purpose of the program is to provide prompt abatement of graffiti located on city/government property from public view on streets, signs, city buildings, and block walls. Its goal is to remove the graffiti in less than 48 hours from the date the information is received by staff. Sixteen volunteers remove about 7,500 square fee of graffiti a year in the City, due in part to the continual communication and cooperation with residential and commercial property owners.

In addition, a Downtown Visalians employee removes graffiti in that area, and Visalia Unified School District removes graffiti on school property daily. Graffiti workers also work with the Traffic Engineering Division by removing graffiti from traffic signs and assist the Solid Waste Division by covering up graffiti on enclosures and refuse containers.

Council Supports Visalia 198 Corridor Account for Measure R Plan

City Council approved submitting a proposed change to the Measure R Expenditure Plan that would allow a general Visalia 198 Corridor Account to allow for flexibility for funds to be utilized for projects along the State Route 198 Corridor from Shirk Road to Road 148. This would allow project savings to be utilized in an account to deliver voter-approved projects within the Corridor.

As an example, savings realized from the Santa Fe Bridge over 198 would be able to be used for other projects within the Corridor. Another option might be to reallocate the Lovers Lane Interchange project funding if other options for addressing the traffic flow in that area is found to be more appropriate. The proposal is revenue neutral, allows the City to pursue additional grant funding from federal or state transportation and safety grants, and help deliver the best transportation solutions to residents of the City and County along this regional corridor.
