for Outstanding Program Award

Visalia, CA:  The Visalia Parks and Recreation Department recently received the award for Outstanding Program in honor of the 2015 Visalia Senior Games from the California Park and Recreation Society (CPRS) District 7 at the 2016 Annual Awards Banquet held on February 26th in Kingsburg, California.

The CPRS District 7 is comprised of the municipalities and Parks and Recreation Districts within Fresno, Kings, Madera, Tulare and Mono Counties.  The CPRS District 7 Awards Program recognizes excellence of those agencies and individuals that publicize, develop and manage programs, parks and facilities that align with the Parks & Recreation Profession’s Mission including promoting participation in recreational experiences; strengthening community image and sense of place; strengthening safety and security; promoting health and wellness; fostering human development; increasing cultural unity; protecting natural resources; supporting economic development and facilitating community problem solving.

“It is very exciting to have our inaugural event recognized out of so many organizations,” stated Jeannie Greenwood, City of Visalia Parks and Recreation Director.  “Parks have an important role to play in when it comes to community health and wellness and the 2015 Senior Games was a creative way to engage the public and share our message about recreation and the benefits that can be gained while participating in fun and innovative programs.”

The 2015 Senior Games Opening Ceremonies took place on October 21, 2015 at Riverway Sports Park.  This inaugural event saw more than 200 athletes registered who participated in archery, golf, table tennis, Pickleball, a 5K/10K road race, bowling, tennis, horseshoes and men’s softball.

In order to be considered an Outstanding Program, each entry had to meet the goals, objective and desired outcomes of CPRS District 7 as well as show innovative features, involvement from the community and reflect and support the agency’s mission.  The 2015 Visalia Senior Games was noted for creative approaches to promoting health and wellness for adults 50+; engagement with community groups; sponsorships by community partners including Kaweah Delta Health Care District, local Lions Clubs and Jostens and, for supporting strong economic development by attracting athletes from throughout California to the Visalia area during the 5-day event.

The Annual Awards Banquet was also an opportunity for each local agency to recognize dedicated and supportive organizations within their respective areas.  The Visalia Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to announce that the Community Service Award was presented to Kaweah Delta Health Care District for their on-going commitment and support in promoting health and wellness in the Visalia community.

“Kaweah Delta Health Care District has been a strong community partner for many years and were pleased to be able to honor them with this award,” added Greenwood.  “They continue to support health and wellness and educational activities in Visalia and the surrounding communities, are a frequent educator at the Visalia Senior Center, are an active partner in the Healthy Visalia Committee and most recently were the presenting sponsor of the Visalia Senior Games.”
