Shortly before midnight last night on Wednesday, February 24th, Visaila Police Department responded to a call at the 300 block of West Tulare Avenue where an agitated man was reportedly brandishing a baseball bat near a residence.
As officers on foot checked the area, suspect Troy Cleffman exited his residence and began yelling at officers. Officers attempted to begin a dialogue with Cleffman, but the suspect entered his residence after warning that he would be returning with a gun.
A short time later, Cleffman exited the residence and pointed an object at an officer. An officer fired his handgun, striking the suspect one time in the arm.
The suspect was then taken into custody and transported to a Kaweah Delta Medical Center for treatment where he remains in police custody.
The object was later found to be a large, dark colored machete.
No officers were injured in the incident and per normal protocol in officer-involved shootings, the officer has been placed on administrative leave.
The Tulare County Sheriff's Office is handling this officer involved shooting, while the Visalia Police Department will handle the investigation of the incident leading up to the shooting.
