Traffic Unit

The Visalia Police Department's Traffic Unit offers a number of basic tips to avoid citations and/or collisions:

  • Leave earlier for your destination, allowing time for traffic signals or traffic congestion.
  • Obey speed limits.  The faster you drive, the longer it takes to stop your vehicle and the less time you have to react to an unexpected circumstance. Also, by driving the posted speed limit and allowing sufficient room between you and the vehicle in front of you, you allow yourself enough time and distance to safely stop for a red traffic signal.
  • Signal light cycles coincide with the speed of the roadway they are controlling. If you are approaching a signalized intersection and the light turns yellow, driving at the posted limit will allow you sufficient time and distance to stop.  If you have to brake heavily to stop or feel that accelerating will get you safely through the intersection, you are likely exceeding the posted speed limit.

For further information, please contact the Traffic Unit at (559) 713-4237 or the non-emergency line at (559) 734-8116.
