Trolley service to change: Council authorized modifying the Visalia Towne Trolley route and to change its service hours to focus on mid-day lunchtime service and weekend evening hours. The changes, which will be implemented this summer, will only include operation of the Gold Route between the Transit Center and Conyer, along Main and Acequia, from 11 am to 2 pm Monday thru Saturday, 5:30 to 10:30 pm Friday and Saturdays, and Thursdays during Farmer's Market from 5:30 to 9:30 pm. Initiated in the 1990s in response to parking shortages in the revitalized downtown, the Trolley has enjoyed varying periods of success and waning ridership. Despite aggressive promotion, ridership has continued to decline. Reducing and/or restructuring the Towne Trolley will improve Visalia Transit's overall effectiveness and productivity, and an estimated $200,000 in savings can be allocated to routes in need of additional service. The new operating hours are concentrated around the lunch hour and evenings on weekends. To view the staff report, click here.
