Nomination papers for elected offices available through Aug. 9: Nomination papers for offices to be voted on at the November 5, 2013 election are now available through Friday, Aug. 9, in the Elections Division, Government Plaza, 5951 S. Mooney Blvd., in Visalia. Office hours are 7:30 am-5:30 pm Monday through Thursday, 8 am to noon Friday, and 8 am to 5 pm Friday, Aug. 9. For information on filing for an elective office, click here. The offices for which Nomination Papers will be available include three council member seats for the City of Visalia, four government board members in Areas 1, 2, 3, and 4 for Visalia Unified. City Council members and Visalia Unified School District members require nomination signatures to be gathered during the nomination period.  

Planning Commissioners, Alternate reappointed: Current Planning Commissioners Adam Peck and Roland Soltesz were reappointed by City Council. In addition, the Council reappointed Gary Gagliolo as an alternate. The City posts all Committee/Commission vacancies in accordance with State law, and accepts applications on an on-going basis. Applications are kept on file for two years. Donuts & Discussion with Council Member Gubler Aug. 24: Enjoy Donuts & Discussion with City Council Member Warren Gubler and Police Chief Colleen Mestas from 7 to 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at Paneras, 4103 S. Mooney Blvd., in Visalia. This informal gathering allows any citizen to address their concerns or ask questions one-on-one with Council Member Gubler or Chief Mestas. Dump On Us for Free July 20: Home generated medical sharps will be accepted at the City of Visalia's Dump On Us Event on Saturday, July 20, from 7 a.m. to noon at the City of Visalia Corporation Yard at 335 N. Cain St. State law prohibits disposing of medical sharps waste in the trash or the toilet. Home-generated medical sharps include needles, syringes and lancets. They must be in approved sharps containers which are available for purchase at local pharmacies. A limit of 24, 1.5 liter sharps containers per person will be accepted. No drugs or prescription medicines will be accepted. Individuals dropping off sharps only will use the south entrance to Cain Street off Main Street. All others dropping off sharps as well as other items will use the north entrance to Cain Street off Goshen Avenue. The Dump On Us event is free and available for all Visalia residents to rid property of any garbage, electronic waste, green waste, and household hazardous waste items. A commercial shredding service will be on site. Accepted items include: cell phones; dryers and washers; mattresses; furniture; scrap metal; small appliances; tires with rims removed; printer toner cartridges; and residential concrete. Green waste accepted includes branches, grass clippings, leaves, lumber and wood, and prunings and yard trimmings. For more information, call 713-4500 or go to www.DumpOnUs.org.

Council approves RFP for consultant to evaluate Solid Waste operations: At its July 15 meeting, Council approved staff move forward with a request for proposals for a consultant to evaluate and make recommendations for improvements to the City's Solid Waste operation. The goals include increased efficiency and cost effectiveness of the operations, increased and more responsive customer service, and increased diversion from landfills. The evaluation will include a full operations and financial analysis in the areas of collection, disposal, and operations and management.

Building permits up 9% for first six months of 2013: 
The total number of building permits issued through June 30 are up 9% over last year at this time. New single family dwelling permits are up 64%, from 98 in 2012 to 161 in 2013. Total valuation of permits is up 34%, from $54,342,986 for the first six months of 2012 to $72,814,690 in 2013.
