Phase IV plans approved for Riverway Sports Park: The City Council approved Concept #1 at Riverway Sports Park as the final design concept for the development of the Phase IV project, a 1.8 acre parcel located in the area of the former BMX track. There were four diffeent design concepts considered by the Council. As part of the 2012-14 budget, Council approved nearly $400,000 in funding to design and ultimately develop the former BMX area at the Park. The HLA Group from Sacramento initially provided nine design schemes, which were narrowed down by staff to three for consideration by the Parks & Recreation Commission. The estimated cost for Concept #1 is $230,856, and it consists of an all turfed area which can be utilized for a number of different sporting purposes for young children participating in youth soccer, baseball, or related sporting activities. The area has pre-existing lights which will be a tremendous amenity for evening practices and games. Bench seating, shaded trees, single-gated entry and existing lighting also will be included. Eleven Firefighters promoted in special ceremony: Monday's City Council meeting got off to a ceremonial start with the promotional badge pinning ceremony for 11 Visalia firefighters. Interim Fire Chief Greg Glass said it was the largest promotional ceremony in his 38 years of fire service. The large number was due to the City of Visalia putting an additional engine company into service to better serve the southwest quadrant of the City and add to the City's fire suppression fleet. New fire engineer paramedics are Nick Branch, Chris Fischer, Franklin Franzen, Troy Stotesbery, James Turnage and Brett Philpott. Tommy Jimenez received his badge for his promotion to Fire Engineer, Matt Cowell to Fire Captain, and Karl Kassner, John Greenwood, and Jeff Macumber as Fire Captain Paramedics. Congratulations to all!
