BARRIER AWARENESS DAY ON OCT. 6
: The City of Visalia’s Disability Advocacy Committee will hold its annual “Barrier Awareness Day” Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012 at the Garden Street Plaza from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Participation in the event is free, and lunch will be provided for volunteers who participate.  The 2012 Barrier Awareness Day is sponsored by the Kaweah Delta Rehabilitation Services, City of Visalia, and BB Advertising. “This event gives participants the opportunity to experience the world through a disabled person’s perspective as wheelchair bound, hearing or visually impaired individuals team with able-bodied participants team and take them through their day to day routines around the city of Visalia,” explained Trilby Barton, chair of the Barrier Awareness Day event.  “It’s a great opportunity for our community to be made aware of barriers and challenges our disabled residents face on a regular basis that we so often take for granted.” To participate in the event, download a volunteer registration form from the City of Visalia’s Web site at:

DONUTS AND DISCUSSION WITH COUNCIL MEMBER GUBLER, POLICE CHIEF MESTAS ON SEPT. 22
: Join City Council Member Warren Gubler and Police Chief Colleen Mestas at 7 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at Panera's, 4103 S. Mooney Blvd. This informal gathering is for any citizen who wants to come and address concerns or ask questions of Council Member Gubler or Police Chief Mestas. IS IT TIME TO CHANGE TO DISTRICT ELECTIONS: When the City's Charter was written nearly 100 years ago, the population was less than 10,000 and it called for at-large City Council elections. A vote by the citizens is required to change the Charter. Citizens will have the opportunity to decide if they wish to change the Charter when a ballot measure, Measure P, goes before voters on November 6. An informational flyer is intended to inform citizens on the differences between at-large and district elections and provide resources to obtain more comprehensive information. NATIONAL DRUG TAKE-BACK DAY ON SEPT. 29: Turn in your unused or expired medication and vitamins for safe disposal from 10 am to 2 pm Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Visalia Police Department at 303 S. Johnson St., and the Tulare County Sheriff's Office, 2404 W. Burrel. Expired, unwanted, or unused pharmaceutical controlled substances and other medications and vitamins, including pet medications, will be accepted. Medication from hospitals, pharmacies, doctor's offices, etc., will not be accepted. For information, call 713-4216.

APPLICATIONS BEING ACCEPTED FOR CITY COMMITTEES: The City is currently accepting applications for six committees. The following committees currently have vacancies: Citizens Advisory Committee; Environmental Committee; Historic Preservation Committee; North Visalia Neighborhood Advisory Committee; Transit Advisory Committee; Waterways and Trails Committee. Applications are accepted on a continuous basis and kept for two years. Visit the City's website at www.ci.visalia.ca.us. "Committees/Commissions" to view the handbook and application. CONVENTION AND VISITORS BUREAU BUSY WITH TOUR GROUPS, CASH-BACK DEALS: The Convention & Visitors Bureau has secured a 40-passenger group tour from Kamloops, Canada that will be in Visalia on May 2-4, 2013.  Guests on the tour will be staying in Visalia for 2 nights, as a part of an itinerary that includes Yosemite, the Central Coast and points of interest in southern California.  Visitors are scheduled to explore Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, as well as the agriculture in Tulare County, by participating in a Nut Butter tasting at Naturally Nuts, and farm tours at Naylor Family Organic Farm and Seven Sycamores Ranch.  Guests will also be led on a historical tour of Downtown Visalia as they enjoy multiple courses on a progressive dinner throughout the evening.

ONE DAY CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE
: One Day - a Big Difference. Make a Difference Day is Saturday, Oct. 17, from 8 am to noon. Four hours, nine ways to make a huge difference in your community. projects range from 100 volunteers planting trees along Packwood Creek from Cameron to Caldwell to painting benches and tables at Plaza Park (40 volunteers needed). TASTE THE ARTS FOR FIVE FUN-FILLED DAYS: The Arts Consortium brings back Taste the Arts for five days of food, art and culture. Fron Sept. 17 through Oct. 1 in downtown Visalia, the community is invited to dig into the many vibrant forms of art that have grown and cultivated in the Valley. The event is free and open to the public. The festival kicks off with the 19th annual Waiters Race on Thursday, Sept. 127. For an application to participate in this year's Waiter's Race, click here. FULL FREEWAY CLOSURE AHEAD FOR PLAZA DRIVE INTERCHANGE: Work continues on the Plaza Drive Bridge. A full freeway closure is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 25 and Wednesday, Sept. 26 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. On- and off-ramps will be utilized to detour traffic safely back onto the freeway.
