Police Department Receives Grant to Fight Alcohol-Related Crimes: The Visalia Police Department was recently awarded a $50,000 grant from the California Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) to battle alcohol-related crime. The grant funds will be used for education, compliance and enforcement purposes. The goal is to reduce the number of alcoholic beverages sold to minors and obviously intoxicated patrons.

Council Approves Request for "Party Status" to Cal Water Rate Case Application: The City Council voted unanimously to authorize the City Manager to request "party status" to Cal Water's General Rate Case application before the California Public Utilities Commission (PUC). Cal Water filed its applications for 2014 through 2016, requesting rate increases of 23.7% in 2014, 2.3% in 2015 and 2.3% in 2016. Becoming a "party" enables the City to receive all proceeding documents and to submit comments to be considered by the PUC. Cal Water representatives say the rate hike is to make up for revenue lost to water conservation. The City Council had asked for the acceleration of the installation of meters to help with water conservation. "The more we conserve, the more our rates go up," said Council Member Greg Collins. Cal Water had reported earnings from March through June which had surpassed the same period in 2011 by $12 million. For the complete staff report, click here.

Save the Date for State of the City: Mayor Amy Shuklian and Vice Mayor Steve Nelsen will present a "State of the City" presentation at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, in the San Joaquin Room of the Visalia Convention Center, 303 E. Acequia Ave. The presentation will include a question-and-answer period and light refreshments will be served. Look for more information in the Aug. 21 issue of Inside City Hall.

July Sales on Sequoia Shuttle Highest Ever: As the Sequoia Shuttle enters the second half of the 2012 season; the Visalia Transit Division can do so with confidence. Sales for the month of July reached a record high, with numbers up 7% from July of 2011. In a down economy, people are continuing to travel, but are looking for less expensive ways to do so. “This is an important milestone for the Sequoia Shuttle. With numbers continuing to increase, this shows us that there continues to be a demand for transportation service to the Park,” says Monty Cox, Transit Manager, “Seats are continuing to fill at a record pace, and total sales for August look promising.”

City to Open Cooling Center Thursday through Sunday: In response to the National Weather Service forecast of hot weather this week, the City will open its Transit Center as a cooling center for the community's use from 10 am to 10 pm Thursday through Sunday, Aug. 9-12. The Transit Center, located at 425 E. Oak Ave., provides amenities such as ample seating, vending machines, and restrooms. All of the Bus Routes eventually lead to the Transit Center, providing convenient transportation. Here are some tips from the Visalia Fire Department to cope with the heat: Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and, when possible, stay in the shade or an air-conditioned room; wear loose fitting, light-colored clothes; drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids; never leave children or pets in a vehicle, even for short periods of time, as temperatures inside vehicles can climb rapidly to life-threatening levels; periodically check on children and the elderly; and make sure pets and farm animals have plenty of water and access to shade.
