Building Permits for Single Family Homes up 26%: Through November of this year, the City has seen a 5% increase in the total number of permits issued over last year. The number of permits for new homes is up 26%, with a 19% increase in valuation. New Commercial permits are up 31%, and commercial additions incrased 4%.

Recycling Food Scraps, Yard Waste Conserves Resources: Your yard waste bin can now hold food items that help create a healthy environment for the community. With the exception of proteins (meat, fish, poultry or seafood - raw or cooked), food items sucha s bakery goods, beans, coffee grounds, and egg shells, just to name a few, can be placed in your yard waste bin for disposal. Dispose of your Yard Waste for Free Through Jan. 5: The City's free annual fall yard waste recycling event kicks off Friday through Jan. 5. All City of Visalia residents are invited to recycle their yard trimmings, grass clippings, leaves, branches, wood, lumber and food scraps. For more information,

Mayor to Host Office Hours Dec. 5: Visalia Mayor Amy Shuklian will hold her regular office hours on Wednesday, Dec. 5, for Visalia residents to discuss issues of concern. Walk-ins are welcome from 5 to 5:45 p.m. in the large conference room at City Hall, at 707 W. Acequia Ave. Appointments from 5:45 to 6:30 p.m. can be scheduled in advance  by contacting  Gladys Ruiz at 713-4314. Mayor Shuklian also can be reached through 713-4400, then enter 8313, or by email at [email protected].

Volunteers Needed for Income Tax Assistance Program: Community Services and Employment Training, Inc., is recruiting 150 volunteers to assist with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which provides free tax preparation and electronic filing services to Tulare County households with less than $50,000 annual income. The program runs from Feb. 1-April 13. A training course is necessary to become a certified volunteer tax preparer. The four-week training begins Jan. 5 from 9 am to 4 pm, and will be held every Saturday in January at the Visalia CSET office.
